How to Change Your Name After Marriage in Canada: A Practical Checklist

There is no single national “change everything” form. Each organization updates its own record, and the difference between assuming a spouse’s surname and completing a legal name change varies by province.

First decide what kind of change you are making

Many provinces let a married person use a spouse’s surname for everyday records while the birth certificate remains unchanged. A formal legal name change is a different process and may produce a change-of-name certificate. Check your provincial rule before assuming that one document or procedure applies across Canada.

Recommended order of operations

Order the official marriage certificate. A ceremony keepsake is often insufficient.
Update the provincial identity foundation. Follow your driver’s licence, health card or photo-card authority’s instructions.
Update your Social Insurance Number record. Service Canada states that a legal name change must be reported; there is no fee.
Notify the Canada Revenue Agency. CRA does not automatically receive a name update from every other department.
Handle the passport around travel. A name change requires a new passport application and supporting documents. Airline and booking names should match the passport used for the trip.
Update financial and employment records. Bank, payroll, pension, insurance, credit cards and benefits may each require evidence.
Finish practical accounts. Property, vehicle registration, professional licences, utilities, memberships, loyalty accounts and emergency contacts.

Travel is the timing trap

If a honeymoon is close to the wedding, do not change a booking name casually. Passport Canada requires an application for a new passport when changing the name, and the name on a travel booking should align with the travel document. Build a secure tracking sheet

Record the organization, required document, date submitted and confirmation number. Do not store full ID numbers or unencrypted scans in a casual shared document. Keep originals safe and send copies only through an organization’s official channel.

What does not update automatically?

Assume each record is separate unless the authority explicitly says otherwise. CRA notes that it does not share a name change with other government departments. A bank update does not update payroll; a provincial ID change does not necessarily update a passport.

If you keep your current name

No change is required simply because you married. You can still order a marriage certificate and update marital status where an agency, insurer or benefit plan requires it. Name choice and marital-status reporting are separate questions.
